Macenzie Ceglar is currently a 5th year student in the Architectural Engineering Program at Penn State University. In May 2014, she will graduate with an Integrated Bachelor/Master of Architectural Engineering degree, with a focus in structural systems. Last October, Macenzie passed the FE Exam and will gain EIT status upon graduation. After graduation, she plans to pursue her PE license, and looks forward to working as a structural engineer at a design firm.
Over the past several summers, Macenzie has spent her time working at a swimming pool construction business in her hometown. At her job she gained communication skills by speaking with current and potential clients. She spent much of her time working with other employees to solve problems and engineer solutions for common issues in the industry. This experience gave her the opportunity to participate in a work environment where the focus was solving problems that were constantly changing.
During the school year, Macenzie spends time as a teaching assistant and grader for several architectural engineering courses. Over the last two years, she worked with the “Reading Drawings” class, and currently she is the TA for “Steel and Wood Design for Buildings.”
At Penn State, Macenzie is involved in several student organizations including Student Society of Architectural Engineers (SSAE), Structural Engineers Association (SEA), and Engineering House (E-House). Through these organizations she has had the opportunity to mentor underclassmen and build relations with other students. Outside of school, Macenzie enjoys playing video games, participating in fantasy football/hockey, and hunting.
POST THESIS
Macenzie successfully completed her senior thesis project, which involved the structural redesign of the UVA's New Library. She redesigned the existing composite steel structure using a conventionally reinforced two-way concrete slab system, along with also investigating the possibility of a post-tensioned slab system. For her work throughout the year, she was awarded the Cagley & Associates Award for First Place Structural Thesis. After graduation she will be moving to Potomac, Maryland where she will be working for The SK&A Group in their structural design division.
